INTRODUCTION:
Welcome to Innernet's BugShield Anti-Virus System Information!
This page is intended to provide additional information including email
availability issues, limitations, policies and procedures.
In order to fully control and contain spam and virus-infected messages, you can use the Quarantine in WebMail.
BACKGROUND:
The most common method of computer virus transmission today is via e-mail file attachments. The growth of viruses spread via e-mail continues to increase. Viruses of almost every type continue to be developed by malicious, irresponsible people.
Given the popularity of the Internet, Team Innernet considers it unconscionable to stand by and do nothing in the defense of our friends regarding the threat of e-mail viruses. In your defense, we have decided to take action.
Normally, the only defense against computer viruses is to
purchase a copy of a commercial virus scanning-and-cleaning
program from companies such as McAfee or Norton, and running
these programs diligently.
Well, Team Innernet has developed our own defense against e-mail viruses
sent to or from Innernet friends via Innernet, Inc. e-mail accounts.
We've dubbed it "BugShield".
BugShield OVERVIEW:
BugShield scans all incoming and outgoing e-mail file attachments
for 209,953 known types of viruses, trojans and
variants *BEFORE* the e-mail gets delivered to the recipient.
BugShield's virus scanning database of virus signatures is updated
as quickly as the professionals at Norman ASA update
their own virus signature database(s). It is automatically updated
as soon as those updates are released, without the need for ANY
manual intervention.
The BugShield system consists of a suite of software tools implemented on
Innernet's various e-mail servers.
Developed by the leaders of the anti-virus industry and fully integrated by Innernet,
BugShield uses the most robust, accurate and up-to-date virus scanning
software by Norman ASA (industry leader in anti-virus
scanning software) to scan for any viruses transiting Innernet's email
servers as file attachments.
As emails are delivered to Innernet's e-mail servers, BugShield process the e-mail by:
1. BugShield accepts the e-mail and examines it immediately.
2. The virus scanner is invoked, and reports the status
(Virus Detected=Yes or No) to BugShield.
3. If the e-mail can be "cleaned", BugShield then delivers the e-mail.
4. If the e-mail is "infected" and cannot be cleaned, BugShield moves the email to the quarantine.
Innernet's BugShield system helps protect your computer from viruses
infecting e-mail attachments in four major ways:
1. It stops infected emails sent to your Innernet e-mail account(s),
identifies the detected virus and alerts you of the details.
2. It filters certain file extensions of attacments that are commonly used in a malicious manner.
3. BugShield also protects non-Innernet Internet users by preventing
the spread of viruses via e-mail from any infected Innernet customer's computer.
4. BugShield sends a weekly report to Innernet customers listing the number of suspected viruses quarantined.
If BugShield detects a virus in the file attachment, it
does NOT deliver the infected e-mail or attachment(s). Instead, BugShield
places the email in the quarantine and renders the attachment unuseable. If BugShield detects an attachment that is commonly used to launch a virus from the Internet, regardless if a virus is not imbedded in the attachement, BugShield does NOT deliver the e-mail or attachment(s) and moves it to the quarantine.
